Sen. Casey Urges Congress To Act To Renew Federal CHIP Program

THOUSANDS OF PENNSYLVANIA CAN’T STAND TO LOSE THEIR HEALTH THE SENATOR IS PUSHING FOR ACTION ON THIS. HERE’S MORE. Reporter: SENATOR BOB CASEY STOP BY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN PITTSBURGH ON MONDAY TO MEET THE KIDS AND MAKE A SPECIAL PITCH FOR RENEWING CHECK THE CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THIS BILL PASSED THIS WEEK. IT WAS HIS FATHER THE RATE — LATE GOVERNOR CASEY WHO SIGNED THE FIRST BILL IN 1992. IT WAS THE MODEL FOR THE FEDERAL BILL SIGNED BY PRESIDENT CLINTON IN 1997. THE PROGRAM TO PROVIDE HEALTH INSURANCE TO CHILDREN OF MIDDLE INCOME FAMILIES WHO DO NOT QUALIFY FOR MEDICAID HAS ENJOYED BIPARTISAN SUPPORT OVER THE YEARS. BUT CASEY BLAMES REPUBLICAN LEADERS FOR NOT SCHEDULING A VOTE TO RENEW THE PROGRAM. WHILE THEY ARE OBSESSING ABOUT GETTING A TAX BILL FOR BIG CORPORATIONS AND THE SUPERRICH, THEY ARE DELAYING ACTION ON CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE. 180,000 PENNSYLVANIA CHILDREN STAND TO LOSE THEIR HEALTH INSURANCE IF THE REPUBLICAN CONGRESS DOES NOT ACT . SENATOR CASEY SAYS IT MAKES NO SENSE TO PUT PARENTS TO THIS AGONY AT CHRISTMAS TIME. WHY SHOULD ANYONE HAVE TO SPEND EVEN FIVE MINUTES OF THE HOLIDAYS WORRYING ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THEIR CHILD WHO HAS BEEN ENROLLED IN THE CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM IS STILL ENROLLED? Reporter: HE SAYS THE MONEY FOR THIS PROGRAM WHICH COVERS 9 MILLION AMERICAN KIDS NATIONWIDE IS THERE. IT IS JUST A MATTER OF RENEWING THE FEDERAL PROGRAM. ON FRIDAY GOVERNOR WILL SIGN THE STATE PROGRAM RENEWAL BUT CASEY SAYS 90% OF THE FUNDS COME FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT . I WOULD URGE PEOPLE TO CALL WASHINGTON AND SAY GET THE KIDS
