Record Number Of Holiday Travelers Moving Across U.S.

THAT COULD BE A LITTLE DRY STRETCH. WE’LL LOOK AT THAT IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST WHEN I COME BACK LATER. MILLIONS OF AMERICANS TRAVELING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY TO SEE THEIR LOVED ONES FOR THE HOLIDAYS. THAT MAKES FOR A TON OF HUSTLE AND BUSTLE AT LOCAL AIRPORTS. CARY CODD IS LIVE. HOW’S IT LOOKING? Reporter: AIRPORT OFFICIALS TOLD ME EARLIER TODAY THIS IS ONE OF THE BUSIEST TRAVEL DAYS FOR THEM. THEY EXPECT 100,000 PEOPLE TO FLY INTO AN OUT OF THE AIRPORT TODAY. THAT NUMBER SLIGHTLY HIGHER AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT BOTH AIRPORTS THINGS APPEAR TO BE MOVING ALONG PRETTY WELL. IT’S THE BEST NEWS TO KICK OFF THE HOLIDAY TRAVEL SEASON. A SMOOTH, EASY RIDE. ALANA EDWARDS FLEW IN FRIDAY AFTERNOON. SHE HAD ONE BIG WORRY ABOUT TAKING TO THE SKIES TODAY. LAST YEAR I GOT STUCK IN ATLANTA. SO YEAH. BUT, WENT PRETTY WELL. EDWARDS IS ONE OF TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE FLYING INTO OR OUT OF SOUTH FLORIDA FOR THE HOLIDAYS. OFFICIALS AT BOTH MAJOR AIRPORTS SAY FRIDAY IS ONE OF THE BUSIEST TRAVEL DAYS OF THE YEAR. AT FORT LAUDERDALE THERE WERE SCATTERED DELAYS BUT MOST FLIGHTS RAN AN TIME. FORT LAUDERDALE AIRPORT IS ALWAYS VERY GRACIOUS. EVERYONE IS FRIENDLY. WE LOOK TOWARD TO TRAVELING OUT OF HERE. AIRPORT OFFICIALS ARE PREPARED FOR THE DELUGE OF TRAVELERS AND THEY’RE RECOMMENDING TRAVELERS ARRIVE TWO HOURS BEFORE A DOMESTIC FLIGHT AND THREE HOURS BEFORE AN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT. JOSH MONTGOMERY GOT TO FORT LAUDERDALE IN PLENTY OF TIME FOR HIS FLIGHT TO CALIFORNIA. EVERYBODY SAID IT WAS GOING TO TAKE FOREVER WITH BAD TRAFFIC. BUT IT ENDED UP BEING PRETTY EASY. FOR THOSE ARRIVING FROM COLDER CLIMATES, AN EASY COMMUTE IS THE PERFECT START TO THE HOLIDAY. IT’S 50 DEGREES. 70s, 80s. BOTH AIRPORT OFFICIALS — OFFICIALS AT BOTH AIRPORTS TELL ME THEY EXPECT THESE LARGE NUMBERS OF TRAVEL EVERIES TO CONTINUE THROUGH NEXT WEEK THROUGH THE NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAY. AAA SAYS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON THEY EXPECT ABOUT 6 MILLION PEOPLE TO FLY TO DESTINATIONS. MEANWHILE THEY ALSO EXPECT ABOUT 103 MILLION PEOPLE, A RECORD NUMBER TO TRAVEL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. MOST OF THEM BY CAR.
