Holiday Meals-“Recipes From American Farms To Your Kitchen

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE 2.2 MILLION FARMS
IN AMERICA? AND OF THOSE, 96% ARE OWNED BY FAMILIES, NOT BIG CORPORATIONS. I DIDN’T EVEN
KNOW THAT. NOW, WITH THAT IN MIND, WE CONTINUE ON THIS MORNING WITH OUR SERIES ON FAMILY
TIES, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FARMERS AND FOOD. WITH THE HOLIDAYS FAST APPROACHING,
WHO BETTER TO TURN TO FOR GREAT RECIPES THAN KRISTIN REESE, A VOLUNTEER FOR COMMON GROUND,
A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT DESIGNED TO GET WOMEN TALKING ABOUT HOW AND WHERE OUR FOOD COMES
FROM. SHE IS ALSO A FARM OWNER IN CENTRAL OHIO. GOOD MORNING!
GOOD MORNING! THANKS SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME. ARE YOU KIDDING? I’M THRILLED YOU’RE HERE.
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY? WELL, NOT ONLY BECAUSE YOU’RE GREAT AND THE FOOD HERE IS GREAT, BUT
BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER AND I WERE READING CHARLOTTE’S WEB.
OH, A CLASSIC. AND SHE TELLS ME, “MOMMY, I WANNA LIVE ON
A FARM.” WELL, SHE IS WELCOME TO COME TO OHIO ANYTIME.
(LAUGHTER). WE’D LOVE TO HAVE HER.
IT MUST BE GREAT TO BE RAISED ON A FARM. IT IS. YOU KNOW, I GREW UP ON A FARM AND IT’S
A WONDERFUL WAY TO RAISE OUR CHILDREN, TWO CHILDREN. AND THEY LOVE THE FARM LIFE AND
ALL THE THINGS THAT THEY’RE, YOU KNOW, ABLE TO LEARN FROM IT.
TOO MUCH FUN. AND YOU KNOW, I WAS REALLY SURPRISED WHEN I READ THAT NOW, THAT MOST OF THE FARMS
ARE OWNED BY FAMILIES. THEY ARE. AND IT’S AN EXCITING FACT. AFTER
MANY YEARS OF BEING ON THE DECLINE, IT’S ACTUALLY A 4% INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT OF FAMILY FARMS
IN THE UNITED STATES, AND THAT’S SOURCED BY THE UNITED STATES’ DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE,
SO VERY EXCITING FOR THOSE OF US INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURE AND IN AMERICA.
AND YOU’RE A VOLUNTEER FOR COMMON GROUND. TELL ME WHAT THAT IS.
COMMON GROUND IS A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT OF FARM MOMS, JUST LIKE MYSELF–.
MM HMM. –AND IT’S ACTUALLY MOMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY,
THAT KIND OF COME TOGETHER TO TALK ABOUT FOOD AND FARMING, WHAT WE DO ON OUR FARMS, AND
RELATE IT TO CONSUMERS JUST LIKE YOURSELF AND TALK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, FOOD AND FARMING
AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THEY HAVE AND HOPEFULLY OPEN THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION ABOUT WHAT
FARMING REALLY IS AND THE FOOD THAT THEY BUY IN THE GROCERY STORE.
AND SPEAKING OF FOOD, THE HOLIDAYS ARE FAST APPROACHING, AND I KNOW YOU’VE GOT…
YES! OH MY GOSH. TELL ME WHAT WE HAVE HERE TODAY.
WELL, TODAY, WE’RE GONNA TALK ABOUT A FAMILY FAVORITE OF OURS, A PORK TENDERLOIN. IT’S
GOT A FANTASTIC RUB AND MARINADE ON THAT. WOW.
AND THEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE DESSERTS OF ALL TIME IS THE CHOCOLATE MOCHA CAKE.
AND I KNOW AS A MOM, AT LEAST FOR ME…YOU HAVE HOW MANY CHILDREN?
TWO. TWO. AND I HAVE TWO CHILDREN TOO. YOU KNOW,
NUTRITION IS REALLY IMPORTANT. YOU WERE RAISED ON A FARM, IN CENTRAL OHIO. GIVE ME SOME IDEAS
IN TERMS OF NUTRITIONAL VALUE IN BEING ON THE FARM.
WELL YOU KNOW, I THINK IT’S THE MOST EXCITING PART FOR ME, IS THAT MY CHILDREN CAN SEE IN
ALL THE DIFFERENT STEPS OF WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM.
OH, THAT’S TRUE. YOU KNOW, PLANTING THE SEED IN THE GARDEN.
YOU KNOW, RAISING THE SHEEP ON THE FARM. AND THEN SEEING THE END PRODUCT WHEN WE GO TO
THE GROCERY STORE, YOU KNOW, WHERE OUR PRODUCT ENDS UP. AND TO ME, THAT’S REALLY EXCITING.
EDUCATING AND, YOU KNOW, DEVELOPING THE FUTURE LEADERS IN AGRICULTURE. IT’S PRETTY EXCITING
FOR ME. AND THEY CAN REALLY APPRECIATE IT MORE–.
THEY DO, HOPEFULLY. –AT THE END OF THE DAY. ALL RIGHT. SO TELL
ME HOW YOU MADE THIS. BECAUSE THIS IS SOMETHING I KNOW MY FAMILY WOULD LOVE.
OH, THE SMELL, IT’S JUST FANTASTIC. SO, YOU’RE GONNA GO TO THE GROCERY STORE. YOU ARE GOING
TO PICK OUT A PORK LOIN OR A PORK TENDERLOIN. YOU KNOW, PICK ONE THAT DOESN’T HAVE TOO MUCH
FAT. IF IT HAS A LITTLE EXCESS, FEEL FREE TO TRIM THAT OFF. WE’RE GOING TO USE SOME
SPICES. WE HAVE GOT CINNAMON AND CUMIN, SALT AND PEPPER. AND A LITTLE BIT OF RED PEPPER.
OOOHH. AND MIX THOSE SPICES TOGETHER–.
ZING. –AND THE SMELL JUST MIXED TOGETHER IS FANTASTIC.
GIVE THE PORK LOIN A GOOD RUB ON THE ENDS, ON THE SIDES, AND THEN WE’RE GONNA PAN SEAR
THAT, AND THAT JUST KIND OF SEARS IN THE JUICES FROM THE PORK AND THE FLAVOR FROM THE SPICES.
AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO THAT A DAY AHEAD IF YOU’D LIKE, IF YOU’VE GOT A PARTY THE NEXT
DAY. SO IT’S A GREAT DO-AHEAD. AND THEN WE’VE GOT THIS GLAZE WHICH IS THE BROWN SUGAR, GARLIC,
AND A TABASCO, AND THEN YOU’LL JUST DRIZZLE THAT OVER THE PORK LOIN AND BAKE IT IN THE
OVEN. AND IT IS EASY, SIMPLE, IT’S NUTRITIOUS, AND IT PACKS A LOT OF PUNCH.
AND IT’S SO TASTY. NOW, TALK ABOUT PACKING A LOT OF PUNCH.
MMMM…THE CAKE. HELLO! LOOK AT THIS!
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE THINGS TO MAKE, AND THE KIDS LOVE TO HELP WITH THIS TOO, BUT
IT’S A CHOCOLATE MOCHA CAKE. SIMPLE CAKE. IT’S A BUTTERMILK BASED CAKE.
OOOHHH. AND IT JUST HAPPENS TO HAVE A CUP OF COFFEE
IN THE CAKE AND THEN SOME ESPRESSO IN THE FROSTING. AND IT’S REALLY SIMPLE. I THINK
IT’S EVEN BETTER THE SECOND OR THIRD DAY. (LAUGHTER).
YOU KNOW, IN THE MORNING, WITH YOUR CUP OF COFFEE? AND THEN OF COURSE, WE’VE GOT ALL
OF THE BEAUTIFUL FRUIT. WHATEVER’S IN SEASON, OR GO TO YOUR GROCERY STORE AND JUST PICK
SOMETHING OUT. AND THE KIDS LIKE TO HELP WITH THIS TOO. THEY LIKE TO DO THE GARNISHES. SOMETIMES
GO TO THE GARDEN AND PICK THE MINT LEAF TO GO ON TOP, SO IT’S A FUN THING FOR ADULTS
TO EAT AND YOU DON’T WANT YOUR KIDS TO EAT TOO MUCH OF IT THOUGH. THAT’S THE ONLY WARNING.
OKAY… (LAUGHTER).
SO, THESE ARE ALL, OBVIOUSLY, NEAR AND DEAR TO YOUR HEART.
MM HMM. THESE ARE FAMILY RECIPES, RIGHT?
YES. YOU HAVE MORE TO OFFER FOR US?
WE DO. WE ACTUALLY HAVE A WEBSITE findourcommonground.com, YOU CAN FIND THESE RECIPES AND MANY OTHERS

I GOTTA TELL YA, I’M GONNA MAKE THIS WITH MY GIRLS. THIS IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. THANK
YOU SO MUCH. THANKS SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
SO SINCE YOU INVITED US TO THE FARM, DO YOU HAVE A WILBUR? THAT’S WHAT MY DANIELLA IS
GONNA ASK ME. “DO THEY HAVE A WILBUR?” NO. NO WILBURS. BUT WE DO HAVE LOTS OF LAMBS,
SO… OKAY, WE’LL TAKE THE LAMB. (LAUGHTER). THANK
YOU SO MUCH, KRISTIN. HAPPY HOLIDAYS. YOU TOO.
